Sungrow, the global leading inverter and energy storage system solution supplier for renewables, announced that the Golomoti project in Malawi won the “Utility-Scale Solar Project of the Year” by Africa Solar Industry Association. This project applies Sungrow’s Solar-plus-Storage solution. The award testifies Golomoti Project’s contribution to satisfying the local people’s demand of electricity and sets it as a model that explores to solve Africa’s electricity shortage issue with solar energy.
The Golomoti project is a 20MWac solar and 5MW/10MWh energy storage project located in the Dedza district of Malawi, which is the first-ever commercial solar-plus-storage park in Malawi. Sungrow supplied it with the one-stop solution integrating the PV inverter, Energy Storage System and Energy Management System (EMS), and delivered it in December of the same year. Now it has been working stably for over 8 months, providing constant clean electricity for over 100,000 households nearby, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by about 3,000 tonnes per year.
In the next 25 years, Sungrow’s solar and storage solution will guarantee its stable power conversion and expects to produce an average of over 55 GWh of clean energy. As only 13.4% of Malawi’s population can access electricity, this BESS project makes outstanding contributions to enriching this country’s power sources and reducing its reliance on expensive and polluting diesel generators. More importantly, the success of the Golomoti project also demonstrates the feasibility to use renewable energy to solve Africa’s electricity shortage problem, and will encourage more projects of this kind to be delivered on this continent.
“The Golomoti Project marks a milestone of Sungrow’s years-long strategic exploration of Africa’s renewable energy market. Winning this award is a prestigious honour for both our quality solutions and our team. Being dedicated to providing clean power for more African people, Sungrow’s turnkey solution also supplied Egypt’s largest solar-plus-storage plant in the Sukari gold mine, Karmsolar’s microgrid project, and the Tshipuka BESS Project in the Congo. In the future, we look forward to delivering more renewable energy projects for this region with our industry-leading solutions and sincere services”, said Phyllis Yang, Sungrow’s director of the Southern Africa region.
