São Paulo, Brazil, August 27th, 2025 -- As Brazil upgrades its solar safety regulations, rapid shutdown functionality has become a mandatory feature for residential, commercial, and industrial rooftop PV systems. During Intersolar South America 2025, Sungrow, the global leading PV inverter and energy storage system provider, unveiled its PV rapid shutdown solution tailored for the Brazilian market.
The solution, consisting of the SR20D-M rapid shutdown (RSD) device, SR200T-BX RSD controller box, and Sungrow inverters, ensures system safety by reducing module voltage to a safe level within 30 seconds, providing reliable protection for people and property.
30-Second Shutdown for Faster Risk Mitigation
According to Brazil’s newly released standard ABNT NBR 17193:2025-02-04, rooftop PV systems must lower DC voltage below 35 V within 30 seconds in case of utility power outages, fires, or other emergencies. Previously, Brazil’s fire authority also emphasized the importance of rapid shutdown devices in NORMA TÉCNICA 44/2023, urging the industry to enhance emergency response capability.
In traditional systems, when the power is cut, the rooftop panels stay energized and the voltage only drops slowly on its own. This “wait and see” approach can take several minutes, leaving hundreds of volts running across the roof — a serious risk for firefighters or anyone who needs to intervene.
Sungrow’s new rapid shutdown solution actively brings the DC voltage down to a safe level (below 35 V) in just 30 seconds, ensuring that rooftop arrays quickly enter a safe zone. This creates a much safer environment for emergency crews and maintenance teams, significantly reducing risks and potential losses.
Patented Low-Temperature Bypass for Long-Term Reliability
In rooftop solar systems, if a panel is heavily shaded or develops a fault, shutdown devices activate a bypass mode. This allows the faulty panel to be isolated while the rest of the system keeps generating power.
The problem with conventional designs is that during bypass, device temperatures can soar to 180–190°C. This extreme heat goes well beyond the safe limit of electronic components, which leads to faster aging, seal failures, or even cracks in the casing. Over time, that shortens the system’s lifespan and raises the risk of malfunctions.
Sungrow solves this with its patented Fault Heat Control (FHC) low-temperature bypass technology, which keeps the temperature under 120°C, about 33% lower than conventional solutions. This breakthrough keeps the system safe, stable, and reliable in the long run.
To handle Brazil’s diverse climates — from salty coastal air to humid Amazon conditions — the devices also feature C5 anti-corrosion protection and the industry’s leading IP68 rating (IP68 for SR20D-M, IP65 for SR200T-BX). This means they are built to last for up to 25 years of reliable operation, even in the toughest environments.
One Brand, One Solution
From residential rooftops to large industrial complexes, Sungrow’s rapid shutdown solution offers flexible adaptability:
Long-distance signal coverage (450m): The solution covers much larger rooftop areas than conventional designs. This means fewer communication cables or extra devices are needed, lowering installation costs and improving overall system stability.
Ready for high current and multi-string compatibility: The SR20D-M supports up to 20 A, making it compatible with diverse solar modules. The SR200T-BX can handle currents up to 200 A and connect as many as 30 DC strings, giving installers more flexibility in system design without extra limitations.
Fast and simple installation: Compatible with 4–10 mm² PV cables. The SR20D-M features a snap-fit design, enabling installation within 35 seconds, 45% faster than traditional solutions.
Sungrow’s "one-stop solution" provides seamless integration with inverters, creating a cohesive "one brand products, one data system, one control system, one linkage logic" model that enhances efficiency and security. This all-in-one approach eliminates the need for complex wiring, additional testing, and other installation requirements.
“The rapid shutdown solution makes every solar module safer with simplified installation and maintenance throughout its lifecycle, reinforcing Sungrow’s position as a trusted contributor in the renewable energy industry,” said Ada Li, Vice President of Sungrow Americas.
